What are arcade computer games? Those are the video games that you might play at the bowling alley or at a place that has a number of video games that you would put a quarter in to play. The arcade game genre started with a game called Pong. It was a video representation of ping pong with paddles and a bouncing ball. Later a number of video games came out that required a lot of hand eye coordination. The object of the games were to “clear the board” of objects to get a new level. If I have the chance to buy the very same game from a retailer or download the game from a reputable download company, which would I choose? I would definitely download the game rather than buy it retail? Why? For three reasons: price, convenience, and backup. Let me explain.

First and foremost, the over all cost is a lot lower. Retail stores have to shelve and ship CDs, they pay employees to handle them and check you out at the counter. Most CD games go from $9.99 through $49.99. At downloaders like Big Fish Games, you can get the very same games for $6.99. I know, I know, you think you can get the game for about that much on Amazon–think again. Although it is possible to find a game on sale, most of the Amazon games start at the same price as the retailers, and unless you buy $25 or more of merchandise you have to pay Amazon for shipping. Then you have to wait for the two weeks or so for the game to get to you–but I’m getting ahead of my self, below are the other reasons downloading is better.

Secondly, convenience and immediacy. I get the play the game right away. I don’t have to wait the weeks for it to show up on my door step, and I don’t have to call around town or go visit stores to get my game, I can download it and start playing immediately. Don’t you just love instant gratification?

Thirdly, your game is always available on Big Fish to download again. If you are like me, you have a number of CDs lying around. Sometimes those CD get dropped, broken, scratched, etc. you know what happens to them. When that happens, I’m immediately out my $19.95 or what ever the purchase price was. But if I down load the game from Big Fish Games, they have a purchase history menu. I just have to click the install button again, and I get to download the game again. My hard drive can get fried, or I can lose my laptop, and I can still get my games back because they are on the Big Fish Website ready to download when and where I want them. This has saved me lots of bucks and will save you too.

Computer games come in all sorts of packages. They come on CD, DVD, and online. But my favorite package for computer games are downloadable games. Why? Because I can download the games once and then distribute it to a number of my computers. We can have several people using the game at the same time. I enjoy the interaction that we get when we have members of the family playing the same game on different computers. We can compare scores, or how far each family member has progressed in the game play. Maybe there is a challenge that one person has done better with. We can compare what each person has done and look for ways to improve. If you download from the right suppliers, they keep track of the games that you have purchased and will let you download it again and again. When I get games on CD or DVD, once the disk gets scratched, I can never use the game again. If I have it on CD, I usually have to have the CD in the drive, or the game won’t work. What I like the most about downloadable games, is that they are so much cheaper than buying them off of the store shelves. I can get the same games, that regularly sell for $16 to $32, for $6.99. When it comes to games, the old adage, “you can’t judge a book by its cover” applies completely. You can’t tell by the name and even by the screen shots what a game is going to be like. The Nancy Drew Series Award Winners

The Nancy Drew mystery series has to be among my favorite games. Each episode contains hours worth of sleuthing fun. I used to be a fan of the Hardy Boys and the Nancy Drew detective novels. I liked that they were exciting and that there were always plenty of mysteries and puzzles to solve and usually just enough clues that I had at least a good guess about who was causing the problems and why. The adventure games have continued the tradition. I really like the point and click interface. Nancy has some talking dialog for most of the screens. You get to interact with other characters by getting a list of possible questions or responses. Choosing the right response will reward you with additional information. Sometime, choosing the wrong response will make the character angry or afraid and prevent you from getting needed information, and sometimes you get a second chance to ask the right question when they settle down. Be sure and pick up objects and clues along the way. Sometimes they are hidden in obscure corners, but usually you will have to solve a puzzle, find a combination to a lock, locate a key, or perform some service that will open a box or panel that hides a secret object you need to continue the game. Nancy usually has a telephone that she can use to call a friend that usually has a hint or two when you get stuck. I usually like to try and solve all of the puzzles on my own, or with hints from my friends, but sometimes if I get really stuck, I will purchase the strategy guide. It gives just enough hints to get me rolling again after I get stuck. There is always a game walkthrough that I can resort to if I am hopelessly stuck–but they usually spoil some of the game for me, because there is no way to see just the part of the walkthrough that I want. I love the game forums at Big Fish Games, because there are other real game players that post hints when I ask for help. The Nancy Drew Series are among the games with the most awards, winning the Parents Choice Awards most every year.
