The cost of video games has been rising consistently. MSNBC reported that top games would be selling at $49.95 on the retail shelves, and that future games, because of rising development costs will likely cost more. Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities, estimated that consumers could be paying another 10 dollars per title by the end of the year. As an avid gamer, I have watched this rising tide with fear and trepidation. Video games are a great outlet for stress, can teach some skill and be educationally useful. Forbes reported on a study by psychologists at the University of Rochester found that players actually derive a sense of achievement, freedom and social connectedness from games. But the rising cost of games hinders the average consumers ability to pickup new and diversified titles. The exceptions to the current trends of higher prices are tied to internet technologies. The online and download computer games are places where inexpensive games can still be found.

The concept is that the cost of digital storage, CPU cycles, and bandwidth are actually falling and offsetting the rising cost of game development. Computer games that are commonly found on department store shelves for $19.95 can be downloaded for as little as $6.99, which is less than half the cost of the same game on CD or DVD. There is significant savings for game manufacturers who distribute their games digitally via download or online play because there are no packaging material, no physical CD or DVD, no shipping and handling costs. When it comes to games, the old adage, “you can’t judge a book by its cover” applies completely. You can’t tell by the name and even by the screen shots what a game is going to be like. Games that I expected to be scary or exciting have been passe and boring. For a long time my game buying had been hit and miss. I would search through the tittles, read the blurbs that announced the games, and once in a while even find a review or two. But to no avail, even after the research and the work, sometimes I still ended up with a lemon. I found that my chances of getting lucky with a game purchase went up when I asked my friends what games they were playing and which game they liked. But, then I found a game download site where most of the games have a download demo. I could play the game for an hour for free! This was like the ultimate try-before-you-buy experience. It was fantastic. I got a chance to see which games caught my interest. If I finished the hour wanting more, then I knew it would be a good investment.
