The Nancy Drew mystery series has to be among my favorite games. Each episode contains hours worth of sleuthing fun. I used to be a fan of the Hardy Boys and the Nancy Drew detective novels. I liked that they were exciting and that there were always plenty of mysteries and puzzles to solve and usually just enough clues that I had at least a good guess about who was causing the problems and why. The adventure games have continued the tradition. I really like the point and click interface. Nancy has some talking dialog for most of the screens. You get to interact with other characters by getting a list of possible questions or responses. Choosing the right response will reward you with additional information. Sometime, choosing the wrong response will make the character angry or afraid and prevent you from getting needed information, and sometimes you get a second chance to ask the right question when they settle down. Be sure and pick up objects and clues along the way. Sometimes they are hidden in obscure corners, but usually you will have to solve a puzzle, find a combination to a lock, locate a key, or perform some service that will open a box or panel that hides a secret object you need to continue the game. Nancy usually has a telephone that she can use to call a friend that usually has a hint or two when you get stuck. I usually like to try and solve all of the puzzles on my own, or with hints from my friends, but sometimes if I get really stuck, I will purchase the strategy guide. It gives just enough hints to get me rolling again after I get stuck. There is always a game walkthrough that I can resort to if I am hopelessly stuck–but they usually spoil some of the game for me, because there is no way to see just the part of the walkthrough that I want. I love the game forums at Big Fish Games, because there are other real game players that post hints when I ask for help.
